Air conditioning and heating for server rooms
The hottest I.T threat…
There are so many threats to an IT system, viruses and hackers are some of the most common problems which we invest money into protecting our systems against yet so many of us neglect the far bigger threat of overheating our systems.
“93% of companies that lost their data centre for 10 days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster. 50% of businesses that found themselves without data management for this same time period filed for bankruptcy immediately."

A critical factor in prolonging the life of your Servers and PC’s is the temperature of the components. Components that over heat will develop faults over time or completely fail. Components which are kept cool last a much longer and are more reliable. Providing a room environment that is appropriate for the hardware’s optimum running temperature eliminates heat induced faults.
A good operating temperature for a PC is approximately 15 to 24°C. Cooler than this is of course, better than warmer. With an installed climate control system you have the ability to set the temperature at your desired level and prevent instances of overheating. Operating a PC in a hot room that is over 26°C can make it very difficult to cool, increasing the systems chance of overheating.
Too Cold is just as bad…
Systems which are too cold are also dangerous as they are at risk to condensation. Even though most PC hardware can tolerate being at much lower temperatures (or moderately higher temperatures) when they are not running. Equipment which has been exposed to very low temperatures and is then immediately turned on, risk permanently damaging the equipment. It is essential that very cold equipment be brought up to room temperature slowly before use. This is called acclimation.
Turning a computer system on when still this cold risks permanently damaging it. Of particular concern are monitors, hard disks, motherboards, and chips of all kinds (processor, memory, etc.) This covers most of the PC of course, hence the importance of maintaining an appropriate temperature for your system.
If you take a PC that is at freezing temperature and plug it in, it will warm up very quickly, much more quickly than it would if you left it on a table to warm up in its own time. In some cases, you can raise the temperature of equipment from 0 degrees to 65 in only a matter of minutes. Thermal stress is a leading cause of premature failure of electronics components. This is bad enough when the components are raised from 21°C degrees to 65°C; when they are raised from 0 to 65 it is much worse.
Summary
Keeping your system cool is very important, a cool system runs more reliably and lasts longer than one that runs hot. Overheating of the internal components can lead to data loss or even damage to your equipment. In recent years, as processors in particular have gotten faster and hotter, the subject of cooling has become more important than ever and with businesses using bigger, faster and more systems, the need for effective cooling has never been greater.
