Air conditioning and heating for the Education sector

A number of studies have established that poor ventilation, thermal discomfort, poor acoustics, and artificial lighting are obstacles to a student's concentration. They have shown that the condition of school facilities affects academic achievement, as indicated by higher student scores on standardized tests.

In exploring the characteristics of a school's physical structure that potentially impact student performance, Williams (2002) considered such factors as indoor air quality, ventilation, and thermal comfort, lighting, acoustics, and building age and quality.

Climate Controlled Classroom"Poor indoor air quality and ventilation can cause a variety of illnesses, increasing student absenteeism......Recent studies relate direct performance to indoor air quality....a European study of 800 students from 8 schools suggests a decreased ability to concentrate along with increased adverse health symptoms."

Environmental Protection Agency

His research showed an example where twelve primary schools were appraised and given a BQA score and this was compared to the educational achievements based on OFSTED results. There was a strong correlation between air quality and better educational achievement.

American research comparing the data on facilities with test scores and using a simple model that controlled statistically for other factors (such as demographics and income), found that better facilities (including thermal comfort & indoor air quality) can improve the percentage of students performing at or above grade level by 3 to 4 percent and that "improving facilities may be just as helpful as reducing class size."

Rapid Air Conditioning understands the importance of good climate control in places of education. Distractions such as being too hot or too cold and poor ventilation hinder both children and adults ability to learn effectively. That's why Rapid Air Conditioning will tailor an installed climate control solution to support concentration and enhance productivity within the learning and teaching environment.
